PHIL IN THE MORNING

I’ll be honest with you — when Louise Lindley told us she wanted to do a taste test live in the studio, I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for.  Turns out that’s just how I like my radio!

Louise is one of those returning guests who makes my life easy.

Always early, always prepared, always lovely — the dream. If you’ve had her on before you’ll know she’s a natural born medium (her words, not something she went looking for, it just sort of happened) who’s gone on to train in healing with the National Federation of Spiritual Healers, done her Reiki, and eventually landed on crystal therapy, which is what she was in to talk about this time.

Now, I’ll admit, I’m not exactly the target audience for the more mystical end of this stuff. But Louise has this brilliant way of breaking it right down to basics, and she came armed with actual substance rather than just vibes (sorry, had to).

Citrine

Citrine is a bright, golden crystal often associated with prosperity, confidence, and positive energy. It’s believed to attract wealth and success by encouraging a mindset of abundance, motivation, and clear intention.

Here’s the theory: we’ve got crystals in our own bodies, at a level too small to see, and when we take crystals in — even just via water that’s been sitting near them — we’re apparently re-energising our own.

Which is where the taste test came in. Louise produced an onyx cup (gorgeous thing, looks like polished marble) and explained that if you leave water sitting in onyx for 24 to 48 hours, it changes the water’s vibrational energy.

So we put it to the test. Three glasses: plain filtered tap water, tap water that had spent 48 hours in the onyx, and spa water — all unlabelled, so neither me nor Ian James had a clue which was which.

And somehow, against all odds, we both correctly picked out the onyx water as the one that felt most different. Louise reckoned we were the only two people out of everyone she’s tried this on — including her own grandchildren — to get it right. Make of that what you will. I’m choosing to believe we’re special!

Amethyst

Amethyst is a calming, violet crystal known for its soothing and protective energy. It’s believed to promote clarity, balance, and emotional wellbeing, helping to quiet the mind and encourage inner peace.

The rest of the chat was genuinely fascinating. Louise talked us through where crystals actually come from — bits of meteor and mineral clumped together as the Earth formed, growing over millions of years in lava caverns as mineral-rich water seeps through them.

Quartz sits at the top of the vibrational tree (it’s in your radios and TVs, and now in medical tech too), working down through things like amethyst, which she brought along in geode form — half a hollowed-out crystal cavern that, I maintain, looks a bit like a chocolate egg.

We also got hands-on with hematite, which apparently kids can’t get enough of — it’s grounding, calming, and great for anyone who struggles to sit still or focus, hematite being magnetised so little ones can click the pieces together.

If Louise had to pick just one crystal to keep forever though, it’s black obsidian: good for stress, said to offset negativity near electronics, and useful as a pain reliever kept near the body.

Black Obsidian

Black Obsidian is a powerful, grounding stone known for its protective and cleansing properties. It’s believed to absorb negative energy, promote emotional strength, and support clarity by helping to release what no longer serves you.

And because England were playing that night, we obviously had to ask which crystal we should be throwing at the telly for luck.

Citrine for money and energy, apparently, and carnelian if you’re after luck for the football lads. We could all do with a bit of that!

Louise has a children’s crystal e-book going live next week, and she’s kindly offering copies to Mix 56 listeners — no limit on numbers, so get emailing studio@mix56.co.uk and we’ll sort you out.

You can find Louise on her website and social channels — just don’t ask her about Instagram, she’s apparently managed to block herself from her own account. We’ve all been there, Louise!
