Mushrooms have a long history of medicinal use across cultures, dating back thousands of years.
In ancient China, texts like the hennong Ben Cao Jing described mushrooms such as Reishi and Turkey Tail as vital for promoting health, longevity, and balancing bodily energies like Qi and Yin-Yang.
Daoist monks revered Reishi as the “mushroom of immortality” for its spiritual and physical benefits.
Similarly, in ancient Greece, Hippocrates recognized mushrooms like Fomes fomentarius for their anti-inflammatory properties and wound healing capabilities.
Ötzi the Ice Man carried medicinal mushrooms over 5,000 years ago, showcasing their use in survival contexts.
Mushrooms also played roles in shamanic rituals across Mesoamerica and Europe, connecting individuals to nature and spirituality.
Today, medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi, Shiitake, and Lion’s Mane are widely studied for their therapeutic potential in improving immune function, reducing inflammation, and supporting cognitive health.
And there’s an abundance of primrose flowers growing in the wild. Not just a pretty flower – did you know the petals are completely edible!
Barbara also brought in some nettles – which don’t sting if you deal with them properly – and we discuss the virtues of consuming them to combat hayfever symptoms!
You can listen again right here!
Barbara is our medical herbalist – and along with running her practice in Hale, she’s patron of The Herb Society. Why not considering joining the society to learn more about herbs and how you can safely use them in cooking – and everyday medicine?
