Today we’re visiting Victoria Park in Widness, a vibrant urban oasis that has been at the cornerstone of the community since it opened in 1900. It’s a true gem of Northern England!
Established to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, the park is managed by Halton Borough Council and offers a diverse range of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages.
The park was created on the former Appleton House estate, with funds raised through public subscription.
It’s home to several notable landmarks, including a Grade II listed war memorial pillar designed by Harold E Davies, which stands over 16 meters tall and features intricate carvings by Herbert Tyson Smith.
Additionally, there is a memorial fountain dedicated to William Ewart Gladstone and a statue honoring Sgt. Thomas Mottershead, a Victoria Cross recipient from Widnes.
The park boasts an array of facilities, making it an ideal destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. These include:
Recreational Spaces: Tennis courts, bowling greens, basketball courts, and a skate park provide ample opportunities for sports enthusiasts.
Nature and Wildlife: A large lake with a fountain offers a serene setting to feed ducks and enjoy the scenery. The park also features a butterfly house and glasshouses with tropical plants and iguanas.
Children’s Play Areas: Two large playgrounds cater to different age groups, with soft play surfaces for toddlers and a wet play area for older children.
Esposito’s Deli: A café near the bandstand serves snacks and refreshments, complemented by an ice cream parlour.
Events: The park hosts a weekly 5 km parkrun every Saturday morning.
Smithy went along and called in to meet to meet the team at Esposito’s and chatted with some of the visitors. You can listen again right here.
