Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is a special type of vinegar which is made using fermented apple juice.  It’s rich in probotics and antioxidant polyphenols and is often referred to as a superfood.

Apple cider vinegar is often used to make salad dressings and marinades.  It’s also believed to boost health in many ways.  Many people use the vinegar to aid weight loss, help relieve heartburn and help control blood sugar.

Some use the vinegar neat to treat dandruff and to heal minor skin conditions.  Others mix with water to create effective, antibacterial cleaning products for the home.

The vinegar is widely available commercially, though it is perfectly possible to create your own!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

We all know that apples are very healthy.  Apple Cider Vinegar is said to have added benefits – but it’s important to remember that only a limited amount of verified scientific research exists.

But as a natural remedy, Apple Cider Vinegar is a relatively safe supplement to consume in moderation – a teaspoon or two before eating a large meal is said to help digestion and is worth a try if you often suffer from heartburn or acid reflux.

Tastes like….vinegar!

During today’s tasting session live on air, we sampled a standard home-produced ACV and a pumped-up version with added beneficial ingredients.

A quick sniff confirmed that I had a shot glass full of vinegar!  The familiar aroma of Acetic Acid was prominent in both versions – and perhaps, for many it’s not the most appealing smell.

But the proof is in the tasting and actually, it turns out that Apple Cider Vinegar is certainly similar, but milder than the Malt vinegar we are normally used to.

The pumped-up version was spicy, with added ingredients including horseradish, garlic and pepper – but was slightly sweeter as a glug of local honey had been added for good measure.

The verdict

We were really looking forward to trying Apple Cider Vinegar.  Whether it lives up to the hype, time will tell – but that doesn’t stop millions of people worldwide swearing by it.   One thing is for sure, it is an acquired taste….and Barbara did say you can get almost the same benefits from Lemons – so that may be a more palatable option for some!
