SMITHY & IAN
Good Morning Cheshire:  29th April 2026

There’s no escaping it – traffic in and around Lymm has been especially challenging in recent weeks, and it’s a topic that’s firmly on local people’s minds.

On this morning’s breakfast show, Smithy & Ian were joined in the studio by Cllr Graham Gowland from Warrington Borough Council, who’s been closely involved in keeping residents informed as disruption continues.

At the heart of the issue is the ongoing work by SP Energy Networks, including the partial closure of Rushgreen Road – a key commuter route through the village. With limited diversion options available, the knock-on effect on traffic flow has been significant and many drivers are feeling the strain.

Cllr Gowland acknowledged the frustration being experienced across the community.

While he stressed that the work itself is essential – replacing underground electricity cables that are more than 75 years old and helping to futureproof the network – he also recognised that communication around the project has left many residents wanting more.

Graham has been actively sharing updates via his Facebook page, alongside Lymm Parish Council. However, as highlighted during the conversation, not everyone uses or has access to social media – making on-air discussions like this all the more important in keeping the wider community informed.

Listeners also had the opportunity to put their questions directly to Graham during the show, raising concerns about traffic management, timelines and the overall impact on daily life.

The current works are expected to continue through until August, meaning disruption is likely to remain part of daily travel in the area for some time yet.

MIX56 has contacted SP Energy Networks on several occasions over the past few weeks but has not yet received a response. We’ll continue to reach out and will bring you any updates as soon as we have them.

In the meantime, we’ll keep doing our best to share the latest information and support our listeners through what is clearly a challenging period for the Lymm community.
