Luca Toolan has already packed a lot into his early acting career, but speaking to Smithy & Ian on Good Morning Cheshire, he came across as grounded, enthusiastic and very easy to talk to.

Best known for playing Mason Radcliffe in Coronation Street, Luca said landing the role was completely surreal, and something that really changed everything for him.

It’s the sort of job lots of young actors dream about, but as Luca explained, actually getting the call and then walking onto one of the most famous sets in British TV was another thing altogether.

He grew up watching Corrie with his family, so being part of it — even for a first professional role — must have felt like a proper pinch-me moment.

And that’s the thing about Luca: although he’s been on a huge soap, he still sounds like a young lad from the North West who’s excited about doing the work and learning as he goes.

He spoke warmly about the people around him at the show, and how well ITV looked after him, especially when tackling the more difficult storylines.

One of those storylines dealt with bullying and knife crime, and Luca was very honest about how serious it all was.

But what stood out was how much he understood the responsibility that comes with that kind of role. It wasn’t just drama for drama’s sake — it was storylines that could get people talking, especially when issues like bullying and social media are so real for young people today.

That local connection also came through strongly when Luca talked about his work away from Corrie.

He’s been involved in a grassroots film project, with a tiny crew and a proper independent feel to it, which gives the whole thing a very North West, get-stuck-in energy.

He also revealed that he’s now working on his own production company and developing short films, with plans to push them towards festivals and, hopefully, a bigger feature down the line.

There’s a lot to like about that. Rather than waiting around for the next opportunity, Luca seems to be making his own. He said creating something from the ground up is what really gets him going, and that ambition should serve him well as he builds on his early success.

For a young actor who’s already had a big break on Coronation Street, Luca Toolan sounds like someone with plenty more to come.

He’s got the TV experience, the local roots, and the drive to keep pushing forward — and that makes him one to watch.
