Danny Daynes Shares the Inspiring Story of the North West Air Ambulance Charity

Danny Daynes – the Senior Regional Fundraiser for North West Air Ambulance Charity – brought energy and inspiration to the breakfast show with Smithy and Ian this morning, shining a much-needed spotlight on the incredible work done every day by the charity’s specialist team.

Many people are surprised to learn that North West Air Ambulance is not government or NHS funded, meaning every mission is made possible thanks solely to fundraising and kind-hearted donations.

Lifesaving Support Around the Clock

Operating from three fully staffed bases—including the nearest at Barton—the North West Air Ambulance helicopters and critical care cars deliver hospital-standard medical interventions 24/7.

These bright yellow mobile hospitals not only reach remote or hard-to-access locations faster than traditional ambulances, but are also equipped with advanced equipment that can make a life-or-death difference at the most critical moments.

Bringing Blood and Hope

As Danny highlighted, every helicopter now carries blood and plasma onboard, allowing highly trained paramedics and doctors to perform emergency transfusions at the scene—often without the need for a doctor to be present.

In 2023, the charity celebrated its 300th blood transfusion – a milestone marking hundreds of lives touched and saved thanks to quick, expert intervention and a direct supply of vital blood products.

The Cost of Saving Lives

Delivering this gold-standard emergency care comes with a significant price tag – about £18 million each year – all raised through ongoing fundraising, generous public donations, shop sales, lotteries, gifts in wills and heartfelt community support.

Legacies left by supporters help ensure this vital lifeline continues, benefitting countless families and communities for years to come.

Ways to Support This December

This festive season, Danny encourages everyone to get involved with some wonderful upcoming fundraising events.

These include seven days of joyful singalongs and Liverpool’s lively 5K Santa Dash, perfect for those who want to take an active—or musical—role in helping keep the helicopters flying.

Not everyone can support financially, but volunteers are always incredibly valued and welcomed; every little act of kindness plays a vital role in keeping this lifeline open.

Real Stories, Real Impact

Danny’s conversation on air was filled with heartfelt, inspirational stories—proof of the difference North West Air Ambulance Charity makes to ordinary people’s lives in moments of extraordinary need.

Whether responding to an accident in the region’s hills, or supporting an emergency in a busy city, the charity’s crew is always ready to bring expert care, comfort and hope wherever it’s needed most.

Get involved if you can this December – and remember – your support, in any form, helps make miracles possible every single day.
