A magical buzz in the tower

From high above the runway, Paul joined the amazing team who keep everyone safe in the air, watching a busy airport get even busier as Christmas Eve flights came and went.

But today isn’t just about holidaymakers and homecomers – there’s a very special guest on the radar, and the controllers are all preparing for one VIP arrival in particular.

Tracking Santa in the sky

Somewhere over the Irish Sea later this evening, Santa and his reindeer will appear on the screens as they head in from Ireland, sleigh packed with presents and Christmas magic.

The team will be carefully tracking his journey to make sure he has a clear and safe path, so he can dash across the skies above our area without a moment’s delay.

Santa’s very special squawk code

Every aircraft in the sky has a special four‑digit “squawk code” that helps air traffic control see exactly who is who on their radar.

Santa has been given his very own extra‑special code for Christmas Eve –  REDNOSE1 7005 – which tells all the commercial and private pilots that his sleigh has priority and must not be held up on his all‑important round‑the‑world trip.

Treats for reindeer and Santa

Down on the ground, Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been getting ready too, with some surprise treats lined up for Rudolph and the rest of the team when they touch down.

While the reindeer enjoy a well‑earned snack and a rest, there might just be a mince pie or two waiting for Santa as he prepares to head back into the night to continue his journey.

Listen again to Smithy’s visit

The whole control tower crew is full of excitement, counting down the moments until the sleigh appears and Christmas truly begins in the skies above Liverpool.
