Lymm Rugby Club brought their 2025–26 season to a close with a hard-fought encounter against Luctonians

It was the final game for Andy Burrows as Lymm Director of Rugby

A thrilling a game that perfectly captured the grit, ambition, and attacking spirit that has defined their campaign.

Played in front of a lively home crowd, Lymm started with real intent, showing early dominance in both territory and possession. The forward pack set the tone, carrying strongly and providing a solid platform at the breakdown.

That early pressure paid off when Lymm opened the scoring with a well-worked try, moving the ball fluidly through the backs before finishing in the corner. It was a statement of attacking confidence and composure.

Luctonians, however, proved why they have been such competitive opponents this season. They responded with physicality, tightening their defensive line and capitalising on Lymm errors.

A spell of sustained pressure saw the visitors claw their way back into the contest, using their kicking game intelligently to gain territory and eventually crossing for a try of their own.

The match developed into a compelling back-and-forth battle. Lymm’s attacking flair remained evident, particularly in open play where their backs looked dangerous with ball in hand.

Quick recycling and sharp decision-making created several half-chances, and their second try came from just such a moment—an incisive break splitting the defensive line before being finished clinically.

Defensively, Lymm showed resilience, especially during a challenging period late in the first half when Luctonians pushed hard for control. Crucial tackles and turnovers kept the scoreboard tight heading into the break, with both sides very much in contention.

The second half saw the intensity rise further. Luctonians came out strongly, applying pressure through structured phases and testing Lymm’s defensive organisation. Despite conceding territory, Lymm’s discipline largely held firm, and they continued to look threatening on the counter-attack.

As the game entered its final quarter, fatigue began to play a role, but the commitment from both teams never wavered. Lymm’s bench added fresh energy, helping to swing momentum back in their favour.

A key moment came when sustained pressure deep in Luctonians’ half resulted in another scoring opportunity, showcasing Lymm’s persistence and ability to convert pressure into points.

The closing stages were played at high tempo, with Luctonians refusing to relent. However, Lymm’s game management in the final minutes was composed, controlling possession and territory to see out the contest.

While the result marked the end of the season, the performance itself was a fitting reflection of Lymm’s progress. There was attacking ambition, defensive determination, and a clear sense of cohesion throughout the squad. Against a well-drilled Luctonians side, they demonstrated their ability to compete, adapt, and finish strongly.

As the final whistle blew, there was a sense of pride around the ground. For players, coaches, and supporters alike, this was more than just the last game—it was a celebration of a season built on effort, development, and community spirit.

With foundations firmly in place, Lymm can look ahead to the next campaign with confidence and optimism.
