Understanding Endometriosis – A Conversation with Dr Emma Lynch

This month in our Meet the Consultant podcast series with Spire Cheshire Hospital, Dr Rosie sits down with Dr Emma Lynch, an experienced General Practitioner with a special interest in women’s health, to shine a light on a condition that affects around 1 in 10 women — endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow outside of it — often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other parts of the pelvis. This can lead to a range of symptoms, including pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, fatigue, and fertility problems. Despite being relatively common, endometriosis is frequently misunderstood or misdiagnosed, meaning many women can face long waits before receiving effective treatment.

In the episode, Dr Lynch helps to break down what endometriosis actually means in everyday terms and talks through how it can be diagnosed through a detailed medical history, examination, and sometimes scans or laparoscopic surgery. Most importantly, she outlines the wide range of treatment options available — from tailored pain management and hormonal therapies to surgical procedures and ongoing support for those living with chronic symptoms.

Dr Lynch is known for her warm, patient-centred approach and her commitment to empowering women to better understand their health. Alongside her role at Spire Cheshire Hospital, she is a GP Partner in Lymm, serving as Menopause and Medicines Management Lead and mentoring trainee doctors and healthcare professionals. Her further training with the British Menopause Society and her expertise in contraceptive counselling and preventative medicine all reinforce her holistic approach to care.

“Creating space for patients to feel heard is so important,” says Dr Lynch. “Conditions like endometriosis can have a huge impact on quality of life, but with the right support and guidance, there are effective ways to manage it.”
