World Asthma Awareness Day is shining a light on a vital message this year – making sure everyone with asthma has access to the anti-inflammatory inhalers they need.
In today’s health update, Dr Rosie takes us right back to basics, helping to break down what asthma actually is and how it affects the body.
Asthma is a common condition that causes the airways to become inflamed and narrowed, making it harder to breathe. It can affect people of all ages – and importantly, it’s not just something diagnosed in childhood. Many people first develop asthma symptoms later in life.
Understanding those symptoms is key. Common signs include a persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or a tight feeling in the chest. These can come and go, but recognising them early can make a big difference.
Dr Rosie also highlights the importance of knowing what to do if someone is having an asthma attack. Acting quickly, helping them use their reliever inhaler, and seeking medical help if symptoms don’t improve can be life-saving.
With the right treatment and support, asthma can be well managed – and today is a reminder of how important it is that everyone has access to the care they need.
