Water Safety This Summer Dr Rosie

As the summer holidays get underway and temperatures rise, many of us will be looking for ways to cool off. Open water spots like rivers, canals and reservoirs can seem like the perfect place for a quick dip—but they can also pose serious, and sometimes hidden, dangers.

Dr Rosie from Spire Cheshire Hospital is urging people to take extra care around open water. While it may look calm on the surface, hazards such as submerged debris, weeds and sudden drop-offs can quickly put swimmers at risk of becoming trapped.

One of the biggest dangers is cold water shock. Jumping into water that is significantly colder than the surrounding air temperature can cause an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing, increased heart rate and a spike in blood pressure—conditions that can be life-threatening, even for strong swimmers.

Closer to home, beauty spots like Lymm Dam may look especially inviting in the sunshine, but swimming there is strictly prohibited. Beneath the surface lie powerful and unpredictable undercurrents, and tragically, the site has claimed lives in the past.

With hundreds of drowning incidents already reported across the UK this year, the message is clear: enjoy the sunshine, but stay safe and stick to designated swimming areas. Open water is not always as safe as it seems—and it’s simply not worth the risk.
