Understanding Tourette’s Syndrome
This week, in our Health Update with Dr Rosie, we take a closer look at Tourette’s Syndrome — a condition that’s been in the public eye again after the weekend’s BAFTAs.
Tourette’s is a neurological condition that causes people to make involuntary movements or sounds, known as tics. These can include blinking, jerking, throat clearing, sniffing, or repeating words and phrases.
For some, tics are mild and come and go; for others, they can be more noticeable and frequent.
Dr Rosie explains that while there’s currently no cure, there are ways to help manage Tourette’s — from behavioural techniques and medication to understanding triggers like stress or fatigue. What makes the biggest difference, though, is awareness and acceptance.
As we go through life, we learn that not everyone’s brain works in the same way — and that’s something to celebrate.
Understanding more about neurodiversity helps us create kinder, more inclusive communities where everyone can thrive.
