With Bonfire Night celebrations just around the corner, it’s a good time to remind ourselves how to stay safe — and what to do if you do get a burn, whether it’s from the bonfire, sparklers, or even a kitchen mishap.
Dr Rosie joins us for this week’s health update with some simple but important advice. If you burn yourself, the first thing to do is run the area under cool tap water for 20 minutes. It doesn’t need to be icy cold — just straight from the tap is perfect. Once you’ve cooled the burn, lightly cover it with clingfilm or a clean, non-fluffy material to help protect the area.
If the burn is larger than the size of your palm, or you’re worried about it, get it checked by a healthcare professional. And whatever you do, forget the old wives’ tales — butter is definitely not the cure!
Stay safe, keep the celebrations fun, and remember — taking a few moments to cool a burn properly can make all the difference.
