SMITHY & IAN
GOOD MORNING CHESHIRE
Ever wondered what’s happening on our streets while we’re all tucked up in bed? Well, it turns out something pretty clever is quietly getting on with the job of keeping us safe.
Smithy and Ian from the Breakfast Show spent the day with Cadent’s Sniffer Car team, finding out how this high-tech vehicle is helping to spot potential gas leaks across Cheshire — often before anyone would even notice a problem.
And don’t worry… it’s all far less dramatic than it sounds!

The sniffer car is fitted with some seriously advanced kit, including ultra-sensitive gas analysers, wind sensors, and GPS technology.
Together, they can detect even the tiniest traces of methane in the air — far below what a human nose could ever pick up — and then work out exactly where it’s coming from.
It’s not just about detecting gas, though. The clever part is how the system tracks how that gas moves, using wind data and mapping tools to pinpoint the exact stretch of pipe or asset that might need attention. That means repair teams can go straight to the source, saving time and making fixes more efficient.
Smithy and Ian saw first-hand how the car surveys roads across the region, usually during the night when traffic is quieter and conditions are just right for accurate readings. In some cases, the same streets are checked more than once, helping build a clearer picture of what’s happening beneath the surface.
It’s all part of a more proactive, data-led approach from Cadent — moving beyond the old “wait until someone smells gas” method, and instead using smart technology to monitor the network continuously.

What does that mean for us? In simple terms, it’s about peace of mind.
By spotting potential issues early, Cadent can reduce the chances of leaks going unnoticed, cut down on emissions, and step in sooner if repairs are needed. It also means teams can focus their efforts where they’re needed most, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
For Smithy and Ian, it was an eye-opening day — and a reassuring one too. While we’re going about our daily lives (or getting a good night’s sleep), there’s a whole network being carefully checked and looked after.
Take a look at the video to see the sniffer car in action — it’s a fascinating glimpse into the technology quietly working to keep Cheshire safe.
