Gordon Burns: From Belfast Beginnings to Broadcasting Legend.

Legendary broadcaster Gordon Burns brought warmth and wisdom to the MIX56 breakfast show as he joined Smithy and Ian for an hour of music and conversation, offering listeners an exclusive insight into his extraordinary journey from Belfast to national TV fame.

Gordon’s story began in Belfast, where his love of journalism first flourished with a role at the Belfast Telegraph.

Fresh from school, he embarked on a journey that would see him report on local stories before quickly moving onto BBC Radio, cutting his teeth on programmes like Sports Report.

Returning to Belfast, he became Ulster Television’s sports editor and, soon after, an anchor on UTV Reports, covering dramatic moments in Northern Ireland’s history – a period Gordon described as the most testing of his life.

In 1973, his talents took him to Manchester and Granada Television, where he made history as the original anchor for Granada Reports.

Not only did he present, but he produced major current affairs and political programmes, interviewing prime ministers and shaping the North West’s news agenda for over two decades.

Of course, many remember Gordon above all as the face of ITV’s legendary The Krypton Factor.

Originally reluctant to leave hard news for a game show, he ended up hosting the series for 18 years, guiding contestants and viewers alike through feats of mental and physical stamina – and pulling in millions of viewers every week.

His own scriptwriting and inventive challenges set the bar for television quiz shows, and his gentle good humour became a staple in British homes.

Alongside The Krypton Factor, Gordon’s TV credits span both news and entertainment: from anchoring political coverage for ITV and Channel 4, to his memorable turn on Surprise Surprise, sharing the stage with Cilla Black  and bringing his compassionate interviewing style to a new audience.

He went on to chair the BBC’s North West Tonight for an award-winning 15 years, earning the Royal Television Society’s Best Presenter award multiple times, and a BBC Ruby Award for his outstanding contribution.

In conversation with Smithy and Ian, Gordon delighted listeners with tales from his long career: interviewing eight prime ministers, reporting on sports and politics, and his family connection to pop star Ed Sheeran.

Even in retirement, he remains a passionate supporter of current affairs and a regular voice in broadcasting, inspiring a new generation of journalists.

Gordon’s appearance on MIX56 was more than an interview; it was a celebration of a broadcaster cherished for his intellect, humour, and integrity.

His life’s work – from his Belfast beginnings to TV and radio legend – left listeners feeling privileged to have shared some special moments with a true icon.
