A new host is taking over the reins at Kids Live @5

The new host, Melita is just ten years old – and will become the youngest presenter on MIX56!

Elizabeth Nelson – now aged seventeen, has presented Kids Live @5 for the last 5 years, since the age of twelve. The show started in April 2020, giving local children an exciting focus when the country was placed in lockdown during the Covid Pandemic.

Elizabeth said:

“Being involved in Kids live at 5 has been so rewarding. During my time as a presenter we have coved many important topics, such as Children’s Mental Health week, British Science week and World Book Day.

We also created shows celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, and later the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, the Coronation of Charles III. I also loved our annual nativity and panto shows.

We have been nominated for a Radio Industry National award (an ARIA in the Grassroots category) and the team have featured twice on Granada Reports. I have met so many amazing fellow presenters and guests through my involvement with the show for which I am very grateful.

Sadly though, it is now time for me to take a step down to concentrate on my A level studies, and I cannot wait to hear Melita in the presenter role, I know she will be fabulous.”

The show for the last 5 years has been written by Helen Nelson, Mum to Elizabeth. The mother and daughter duo have together created over 200 shows featuring over 100 different children and guests.

Helen told us:

“I am so proud of the show and all the children who take part weekly. We have created a safe space for children to be involved in radio, to increase their self-confidence and to grow.

It has been so rewarding to see the growth of the children and the joy that being involves brings to them, their families and those who listen.

We cover a wide variety of relevant weekly topics and include regular features: Young at Heart where adults share their words of advice, and we spill the tea on somewhere local to visit.

We also include a weekly book review, updates on Space, Pets and Sport. It really is a show the appeals to many with a great mix of chat and music.”

New presenter Melita has been involved in the show over the last couple of years and has taken part recording content covering the different weekly themes and has hosted interviews.

Melita says:

“I am so excited to be the new presenter of Kids Live at 5. I love being involved in the show – it‘s so much fun and my friends love to tune in.

I am really looking forward to taking on the presenter role and writing the show along with my mum Mika”

MIX56 Station Director Paul Smith said:

“Each week the Kids team research, write and produce a fantastic hour-long show.

I am really proud of how the show has evolved over the last 5 years with Elizabeth and Helen and I’m excited to welcome Melita as our new host with help from mum Mika.

I’m keen to continue dedicating an hour of our output every week for the children of Cheshire to enjoy and participate in.”

Elizabeth’s last show will air this Sunday (20th April) and Melita’s first show will air on Sunday 27 April 2025.
