GOOD MORNING CHESHIRE
This morning on Breakfast, we tackled a subject that affects thousands of men and families across Cheshire and beyond: prostate cancer and the importance of getting tested.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, accounting for just over a quarter of new male cancer diagnoses—around 55,000 cases each year.
Cases have been rising, likely reflecting greater awareness and more testing, but there is a genuinely positive message at the heart of this conversation: when prostate cancer is caught early, it is often very treatable.
One of the biggest challenges with prostate cancer is that it often causes no symptoms in its early stages. That means a man can feel completely well while the disease is developing.
The first step in finding out more is usually a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test. It is quick and simple, and a raised PSA level can indicate prostate cancer—although it can also be raised for other reasons, so further investigations such as scans or biopsies may be needed.
As we said on air: knowledge is power. A simple blood test could give you the information you need to act early—and, in some cases, it could literally save your life.
We were delighted to welcome back Phil Ormesher, Cheshire Governor of The Christie and a Trustee and Ambassador for Prostate Cancer Support. Phil shared a fascinating, honest and—importantly—positive insight into prostate cancer and PSA testing, drawing on his own personal experience.
Phil was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012 and has since become a passionate campaigner for awareness, encouraging men not to put off conversations about their health.
Prostate Cancer Support, working with The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, offers PSA testing at locations across Cheshire.
Some sessions are subsidised, but even at full price the test costs just £27—possibly the best money you will ever spend.
The next session takes place on:
You can book through the official event page: Prostate Cancer Support PSA testing event.
A huge thank you to Phil Ormesher for returning to MIX56 and for speaking so openly about his own experience. His honesty, warmth and determination to encourage men to get checked made for a truly valuable and potentially life-saving conversation.
If today’s discussion has made you think about booking a PSA test, please don’t wait. Share this with the men in your life—because early detection matters.
