Dr Joseph Mills talks about Heart Health Meet the Consultant

Meet the Consultant: A Healthy Heart with Dr Joseph Mills

Your heart is one of the most remarkable organs in the body – it never stops working, beating around 100,000 times a day to keep you alive.

But how often do we really think about looking after it? In the latest edition of our Meet the Consultant podcast, we chat with Dr Joseph Mills, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Cheshire Hospital, about how we can all take a more mindful approach to heart health.

Dr Joe has spent his career helping patients prevent and manage heart disease. He believes that while modern medicine has made incredible progress – allowing many people to live long and healthy lives after diagnosis – prevention will always be the most powerful form of treatment.

“It’s about knowing your numbers,” he says, “but that means more than just checking your blood pressure.”

Dr Joe’s simple ABCDE approach offers an easy way to stay heart-smart:

  • A – Alcohol: Are you drinking within healthy limits? Even small reductions can make a big difference.
  • B – Blood Pressure: It’s vital to get it checked regularly. Blood pressure tends to rise with age, but early monitoring helps prevent serious complications.
  • C – Cholesterol: High cholesterol often goes unnoticed but can quietly raise your risk of heart disease. A simple blood test can tell you where you stand.
  • D – Diet: Small, balanced choices matter. Think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • E – Exercise: Most of us don’t get enough movement, but even daily walks or short bursts of activity can boost heart health and wellbeing.

Dr Joe also discusses how treatments such as statins can help manage cholesterol and how aspirin may play a role after a heart attack – always under medical guidance, of course.

What stands out in Dr Joe’s approach is his realism: heart health doesn’t have to mean radical change overnight. It’s about small, consistent steps – and understanding that the more we know about our own numbers, the better equipped we are to protect our heart for life.
