The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway’s 150th Anniversary Gala Weekend held from 3rd to 5th May 2025, was a jubilant celebration of steam, history, and community spirit – drawing crowds from across the country to the heart of the Western Lake District.

Marking a century and a half since the railway’s founding, the event transformed the picturesque line into a living festival of heritage and innovation, delighting rail enthusiasts, families, and visitors of all ages.

The railway pulsed with excitement as an intensive timetable saw a remarkable parade of both steam and diesel locomotives in action.

Among the star attractions was the much-anticipated return of the legendary “Green Goddess” from the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway-making a triumphant fourth visit to its original trial line, nearly a century after its first appearance at Ravenglass.

Equally thrilling was the comeback of “Bonnie Dundee,” running its first passenger trains at Ravenglass in 20 years after a major overhaul.

The event was a feast for the senses, with every train adorned in special 150th anniversary decorations.

The Ravenglass Railway Museum hosted captivating heritage displays, including model locomotives and a detailed model of the original Boot terminus, while a special anniversary exhibition traced the fascinating origins of “La’al Ratty,” as the railway is affectionately known.

Visitors enjoyed hands-on activities, from vintage rides and interactive exhibits to the ever-popular “Driver for a Donation,” letting guests try their hand at the controls of a real steam engine.

Community was at the heart of the gala, with volunteers warmly welcoming newcomers to The Junction, the newly opened hub of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Preservation Society.

The weekend not only celebrated the railway’s storied past but also looked to its future, inspiring a new generation to join the vibrant volunteer family.
