MIX 56 CHESHIRE'S BEST MUSIC MIX
Wedding bus joy, urgent treatment centre hopes, weight loss win and a pub of the week
Cheshire’s Mix 56’s Paul Smith catches up with Gareth Dunning, Editor of the Warrington & Knutsford Guardian, for this week’s round-up from across the patch.
This week’s front-page story is a brilliant one – a bride from Culcheth has gone viral after taking wedding photos on her favourite childhood bus. She and her best friend Laura were getting married at Paws Bank, the new venue at the old nut west, and planned to walk over to the Golden Gates for pictures.
But then she spotted, across by the bus station, the bus she used to catch every day as a teenager when coming into Warrington town centre for shopping and nights out. They sprinted over, the driver let them on, and they got their pictures aboard the bus before carrying on with the day. A proper heart-lifting story to start the week.
Health is back in the headlines as Sarah Hall continues to push for a new urgent treatment centre in Warrington. The idea is to ease pressure on A&E by giving people with minor injuries somewhere to go instead of waiting for hours in the main department.
Warrington wasn’t included in the 10 centres announced by government last week, but Gareth says plans are now being drawn up and the next round of announcements may finally include the town. Fingers crossed, because this has been a long-running campaign and there’s clearly a real need.
There’s a brilliant health and wellbeing story from Warrington Wolves, where a Man V Fat group has already lost a quarter of a ton between them. The idea is to use rugby as a backdrop for weight loss, fitness and support – and for many of the men involved, it’s their first real connection with the sport.
It’s not just about the pounds lost either; it’s about friendship, encouragement and building healthier routines. A great example of sport making a real difference beyond the pitch.
And finally, it’s time to celebrate a proper local pub: The Wheat Sheaf. Paul says he ate there a couple of months ago and the food was “amazing”, and Gareth agrees it’s a fantastic choice for the weekend, especially as the beer gardens start calling.
The pub is one of Warrington’s older venues, full of character, and also offers live music every weekend. Gareth gives a shout-out too to Costello’s in Times Square, plus the Stott’s and Heath and Lymm sites, saying there are plenty of great places to support if you want to back your local.
That’s it for this week’s Warrington & Knutsford Guardian Review – back next week on Mix 56.
