MIX 56 CHESHIRE'S BEST MUSIC MIX
Endometriosis netball event, crime fiction festival, Frank Walsh tribute and chippy tour
Cheshire’s Mix 56’s Paul Smith chats with Gareth Dunning, Editor of the Warrington & Knutsford Guardian, about this week’s key stories across Warrington, Northwich and Knutsford.
More than 140 women are gathering in Warrington for a netball event this weekend in Birchwood to raise awareness of endometriosis – a condition affecting 1 in 10 women, often linked to periods and fertility issues. Organised by netballers (many women drop out of sport due to health), it celebrates stories from women who’ve battled to be heard by the NHS for diagnosis and treatment.
The paper features their experiences – a reminder there’s support out there and you don’t have to suffer in silence.
Crime novel fans, mark your calendars: Warrington’s first Crime Fiction Festival is coming in April at the Village Hotel. Local authors like Martin Edwards (Lymm) and Conrad Jones will discuss their work and the craft of writing.
With self-publishing easier than ever (thanks Amazon), it’s perfect timing for aspiring writers.
A heartfelt tribute this week to Frank Walsh, founder of Orford Football Club, who has sadly passed away. His family share stories of a man dedicated to making his community better – starting the club which now supports hundreds of kids.
Frank handed out boots to those who couldn’t afford them and poured his time into helping young people. “More people like Frank we need in the world,” says Gareth.
Don’t forget the cards, chocs and flowers this weekend! The paper’s 8 pages of Mother’s Day messages include gems like Will’s: “Thank you mummy, you make the best beans on toast ever.”
Plus 16 pages of World Book Day pics from schools across Warrington, Northwich and Knutsford – parents going all out! Highlights: Dottie Wardle (6, Cobbs Infant & Primary) as a McDonald’s Happy Meal (“What book that is? But I did love her outfit,” laughs Gareth). Latchford St James’ Woody and more – guaranteed smile-inducers.
Weekend section star: Stephen Peel’s chippy tour (he’s reviewed nearly 200 fish & chip shops nationwide). This week: Down Lane (Woolston), Widnes and Orford Friary – reliable verdicts from a true expert (“Someone’s got to do it!”).
Chip shops are tough in today’s market, but chippy tea remains a firm favourite.
Cheers Gareth – back same time next week on Mix 56 for more Warrington & Knutsford Guardian gold.
