MIX 56 CHESHIRE'S BEST MUSIC MIX

There are some voices that never leave you – and for me, Mari Wilson has always been one of them.
Known to many as Miss Beehive and the Neasden Queen of Soul, Mari joined us on the Saturday Club for a truly special chat, marking a long-awaited moment years in the making.
I still remember buying her very first single, Love Man, back in 1980 – drawn in by its retro cover and the promise of The Sound of Young Wembley. While the track didn’t chart, it was the beginning of something unmistakable: that powerhouse voice, rich with Motown soul and undeniable character.
Mari herself fondly recalled that early photo shoot – including a green dress handed down from her sister that didn’t quite fit, cleverly pinned together at the back. A humble beginning for an artist who would soon make a huge impact.
Just a couple of years later, she stormed into the Top 10 with Just What I Always Wanted, followed by her stunning take on Cry Me a River.
But rather than stay in the pop spotlight, Mari took her career in a new direction, building a hugely respected presence on the jazz circuit. From sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s to stepping into the shoes of Dusty in Dusty The Musical on the London stage, she continued to evolve and captivate new audiences.
And now, she’s back!
After ten years in the making, Mari is delighting MIX56 listeners with her brand new single Good News – a joyful, uplifting return to her signature pop sound.
It’s the first taste of her upcoming album Girl About Town, due this September, featuring all original material co-written by Mari herself. She hints it could stand proudly alongside her iconic debut Showpeople – and fans have every reason to be excited.
While the famous beehive may be a thing of the past, the spirit, soul – and sheer vocal power remain as strong as ever. It’s a comeback that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new.
For those who love their music live, there’s even more to look forward to. Mari will be making a rare visit to Liverpool this November – and with tickets already selling fast, it’s set to be a very special night.
