Chester rings out for World Town Crier Tournament
Chester’s world-class town criers bring plenty of cheer
Oyez, oyez! Chester City Centre has been ringing out with booming voices, ringing bells and plenty of good humour this week, as town criers from around the world compete for the coveted World Town Crier Tournament title.
And on Wednesday, Smithy and Ian headed to Bar Lounge in Chester, where the competitors were treated to a slap-up lunch and beer-tasting session, courtesy of Marketing Cheshire.
It was a fantastic chance to meet some of the criers taking part and hear more about their journeys—including some familiar and fascinating faces from across the globe.
Among them was “Krazy” Kevin Howarth, originally from Oldham, who now lives in and represents Toowoomba in Australia.
They also caught up with Judy Campbell from Tongala in Western Australia, one of two female contestants taking part in this year’s tournament.
The reigning champion, Chris Whyman from Kingston, Ontario, was also there. Chris is bidding to make history with a fourth tournament victory.
And, of course, there was time to catch up with David Mitchell, Chester’s own Town Crier, who has been helping to welcome competitors and audiences to the city.
The tournament has seen 25 town criers from eight nations go head-to-head in a series of colourful and entertaining rounds, testing everything from vocal power and confidence to presentation and audience engagement.
The competition reaches its conclusion this Saturday at Exchange Square, outside Chester Market, where the final round will take place before this year’s winner is crowned.
The champion will be selected by a glittering celebrity judging panel, including Cestrian Lucy Meacock, formerly of Granada Reports. Smithy caught up with Lucy shortly before the judging event—and you can hear that interview below.
So, whether you are a fan of local history, international competition or simply enjoy hearing a good, loud “Oyez!”, there is still time to head into Chester and experience this wonderfully traditional tournament for yourself.
The final takes place at Exchange Square on Saturday, with sessions from 11am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 3.30pm. It is free to attend, with the event moving inside Chester Market if the weather is wet.
