It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

But of course, not for everyone – and if the thought of Christmas leaves you feeling anxious, you are not alone.  But the good news is that you needn’t suffer in silence.  Help is available and here is our handy guide to coping through the festive season.

Christmas can be a difficult time for many – and for different reasons.

Maybe it’s money worries – or the thoughts of the loss of loved ones, or other past traumatic life events.  For some reason, these feelings can be amplified at this time of the year.

Mind the Mental Health Charity provide many online resources with great advice – starting with look after yourself.  Be gentle and patient with yourself – and remind yourself that this won’t last forever.

Try to plan on doing something nice after Christmas so that you have something to look forward to.

Importantly, let people know if you are struggling.  This could mean opening up to a family member or a trusted friend – or through Mind’s Side by Side online community.

If you need help right now

Are you thinking of suicide or self-harm?

Do you feel you can’t cope or not in control anymore?

Do you have hallucinations or hear voices?

It’s okay to not be okay, don’t struggle alone.
